We departed Las Vegas with a truck full of camping gear and hamster toys at around 9:00 am and began our drive to San Francisco. Cynthia loaded up her phone with music and I loaded up the cab with candy to help stave off the doldrums that come with driving hours in an endless desert. We stopped for about 45 minutes at the Costco in Bakersfield to refuel and get some lunch, and then hit the road to continue the final 4.5 hours to our Airbnb. Our first memorable moment in the bay area was when Google Maps unexpectedly navigated us to cross the San Francisco Bay on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, an impressive stretch of highway that spans the bay at nearly its widest point. I was more than happy to pay the toll. With only a couple days to explore, we hit up all the tourist destinations in rapid time.
