The Cleveland Art Museum

Our highest recommended thing to do if you’re ever in Cleveland is to go to The Cleveland Art Museum. It features tens of thousands of pieces of artwork covering 6,000 years and is free admission. We went and were pleasantly surprised at the breadth and quality of artwork displayed. They also have a modern, interactive section that allows a guest to create their own art digitally or play games that improve art history knowledge.

We also made a trip to Cleveland’s Lake View Cemetery which is known for its elaborate mausoleums and monuments built for wealthy families. The largest memorial is 180 feet tall, 50 feet wide, and entombs President James Garfield and his wife. Another famous figure from the same era that is interred in Lake View Cemetery is John D. Rockefeller and his family. About 40 years before his death, JD Rockefeller began construction on the Rockefeller Monument, a granite obelisk 65 feet tall in total and the second-largest single piece granite shaft ever erected. It took about a year to quarry, dress, transport, and stand up the obelisk in its final location. Another memorial of note is for some family named Haserot. Their memorial is called the Angel of Death Victorious and is a rather unsettling statue of a deathly angel crying black tears.
