Cowboy Boots & Dinosaurs

Wanting to see some of the natural scenery around San Antonio, Cynthia and I decided to visit the nearby Government Canyon State Natural Area which boasts 40 miles of trails on 12,000 acres of wilderness. After entering the park, we found a trail that takes visitors to some 110-million-year-old dinosaur tracks, but discovered the round-trip journey would take us past sunset and into the night. So we did the next logical thing and decided to visit the world’s largest cowboy boots, located in north central San Antonio at the entrance of a mall right next to a freeway.

We returned to Government Canyon State Natural Area, arriving much earlier than the previous day and hiked our way to the dinosaur tracks. The trail was actually an old dirt road and mostly flat, surrounded by a thick juniper and oak forest. The dinosaur tracks were partially submerged in water and most of them were not distinguishable at all. There were a few that definitely had the dino-footprint shape which was neat to see. After viewing the tracks, we made a loop up to a lookout area which provided us a good view of the topography of the surrounding forest.
