On our way to Nashville, we decided to stop and spend the night in Hot Springs, AR. Not only was it a good time to stop after nine hours of driving, it was also a good place to stop as it is home to Hot Springs National Park. Aptly named after the numerous number of hot springs in the downtown area of the city, the first bathhouses were constructed shortly after the area received federal protection in 1832. The very first bathhouses no longer exist today, but the remaining bathhouses on Bathhouse Row were built around the turn of the 19th century and directly above the hot springs. Despite the development of this national park, there are still trails you hike on Hot Springs Mountain above Bathhouse Row, and even though the majority of the spring outflow is well-controlled, there are random spots along the trails where hot spring water seeps to the surface.
