We first stopped in Charleston, WV for a couple hours on our way to New River Gorge NP. The downtown area was pretty quiet for a Friday evening with few groups of friends enjoying a walk or sharing a meal together. The atmosphere got a bit more lively at the Riverfront Park where food stalls were lined up on a closed road and a small concert was underway. By far the most interesting and amusing thing in downtown Charleston was our hunt for Mortar Man, a tiny sculpture of a man made from excess mortar on one of the buildings.

We also stopped in Charleston on our way back to Columbus for the sole purpose of visiting the West Virginia State Capitol building. While roaming the halls, we ran into a few state senators and representatives who were oddly working (on a Sunday). We were also able to access nearly every room, chamber, nook, and cranny in the building including the House of Representatives Chamber and Senate Chamber.
