Tooling around rural PA

As mentioned in earlier posts, our house in Pittsburgh was actually about 45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh in a community near the small town of Mt. Pleasant. This put us within a reasonable drive of a few less popular attractions in the rural portion of western PA. An interesting tidbit about the area we lived in is that the soil is very rich in iron and seeps into the groundwater giving the water that enters the house a reddish hue. As a result, our sink, toilet, and some laundry were stained.

One point of interest we visited was Fort Necessity, the location of the first battle of the French & Indian War in 1754. The battle took place after a May 28th skirmish in nearby Jumonville Glen where a young George Washington decided to lead an unprovoked attack on 35 French soldiers killing a dozen and capturing 21. Seeking retribution, the French organized and attacked Fort Necessity on July 3rd and by nightfall received Washington’s surrender of his forces and the fort.

Another stop we made was at the Ohiopyle State Park along the Youghiogheny River which has some decent rapids and a nice waterfall. It is also a launch point for whitewater kayakers. We then trekked over to Seven Springs Ski Resort to take in the “mountain” views and look at the runs. We were even able to get in some tennis at a park not too far away that surprisingly had very nice courts in a very pretty landscape.
