Downtown Montreal doesn’t have the most impressive skyline or any imposing structures for that matter. But for what it lacks in skyscrapers, it more than makes up for with its eclectic makeup of architecture, restaurants, events, and culture. There is the very long and lively Sainte Catherine St. that is packed every weekend with a sea of pedestrians going to bars, restaurants, music venues, and shops. A walk down this street exposes you to a wide range of store and restaurant types, from less-refined and wild bars/restaurants to high-end dining and department stores. There is also the massive underground mall that is a few levels deep and spans the distance between several metro stations. It goes without saying that this is a very popular pedestrian passageway in the winter. Overall, the even mix of low, mid, and high rise buildings and low to high-end stores and restaurants brings a diverse group of people to the city’s center which makes it a vibrant and enjoyable area of town.
