The St. Lawrence River

When in Montreal or Quebec in general, it’s impossible to ignore the impact and importance my new favorite river, the St. Lawrence River, has on the cities and the population. Flowing from Lake Ontario to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the massive and swift river is a primary route for commerce and transportation, and a popular destination for a number of recreation activities such as fishing, kayaking, rafting, sailing, whale watching, and even surfing.

For us, our house was about a 30-second walk from the river in Verdun so we saw or were on the shores of the river almost everyday. We kayaked on it several times and ran/cycled along it an additional few more times. A popular surfing spot was about a mile up the river from us and we would go there and watch a diverse group of people ranging from ages 10 to 70 trying to surf the Vague à Guy.
