Cynthia and I had the privilege of visiting the ’76 House, a historic landmark located just across the NJ-NY border in Tappan, NY. Built in 1686, the ’76 House is known as “the oldest Tavern in America” and has served as a popular resting point for many of our country’s founding fathers, including Alexander Hamilton who lived on the second floor for two years and George Washington, who took the beer recipe back to Mt. Vernon where he brewed it himself.
During the American Revolution, the ’76 House played a significant role in the capture, imprisonment, and eventual execution of British spy Major John Andre. Major Andre was detained at the ’76 House during his trial and the days leading up to his execution. These events were dramatized in a few episodes of the AMC TV show Turn.
Today, the ’76 House continues to operate as a popular restaurant, serving delicious food and the same beer recipe that Washington brought back to Virginia. It was a really cool experience to visit such a unique piece of American history and taste a piece of its storied past.

Very cool! I feel like we may have seen this place when we watched the series “Turn” about the American Revolution.

We’ve loved nearly every spot on the east coast so far. Haha, it seems that as we see more sights the more places we want to visit, so we’re not done yet!
