On the way to Charleston, we visited Castillo de San Marcos, a historic fort in St. Augustine, FL that offered a glimpse into America’s past. This well-preserved fortress, built in the late 1600s, stands as the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. We were fortunate to witness the firing of a cannon, a demonstration that highlighted the fort’s military history. Constructed with a unique coquina stone, the fort boasts a distinctive appearance and has withstood the test of time, showcasing its role in defending the nation throughout various conflicts. Although we experienced just a small part of its history, the visit left us appreciating the fort’s significance and its enduring legacy.
