Our neighbors Craig and Amy built a garden in the backyard that they graciously offered to let us use. With years of gardening experience, Craig gave us a number of pointers to help us get started and successfully cultivate some fresh vegetables. We planted rows of green bean, cucumber, garlic, and lychee seeds in late June 2023. Only the green beans made it to maturity and they became ripe for picking in August and continued to produce beans throughout the rest of the summer and into the fall. The garlic and lychee never sprouted and the cucumbers were devoured by the deer. Craig also planted a variety of vegetables including green beans, chili peppers, tomatoes, and squash.
